Biogeographic region: Sand Ridge

This is one of the last fragments of the once extensive peaty swamps and wet meadows of the Danube-Tisza Interfluve. Just like the other wetlands of the Sand Ridge, its only water supply is groundwater and precipitation. Deepest points are covered by relatively species poor reed beds with scattered willow bushes. These sites are fringed by Tussock Sedge stands, which provide habitat for Bogbean, one of the rarest plants of the Danube-Tisza Interfluve. It prefers the little pools among the hummocks. Higher elevations of the reserve are covered by fen meadows.

Besides rare plants, this small wetland area also provides habitat for some amphibians and reptiles, as well as several reed-dwelling birds. Visitors have a chance to encounter European Tree Frogs, Moor Frogs, Edible Frogs, Sand Lizards and Grass Snakes. Common breeding birds of the reed beds include Reed Warblers and Savi’s Warbler.
